When using YouTube, most users perform all operations with the mouse. Scrolling the video, stopping it, or turning up the volume…. You need a mouse for everything, but are you sure? It turns out not – YouTube supports keyboard shortcuts, which greatly increase convenience and save time. I bet you’ve never heard of at least some of them.
YouTube’s most important keyboard shortcuts
The platform has quite a number of keyboard shortcuts, which can effectively make it easier to navigate the video window. The material you are watching is too quiet? Or maybe you want to speed it up a bit, or mute it for a moment? For this you do not need to reach for the mouse. Just press a certain button, or combination, and magic happens.
YouTube shortcuts to make the platform easier to use:
- Spacebar – stops and/or resumes playback
- M – mutes and/or turns on the sound
- Left arrow – rewinds the video 5 seconds backwards
- Right arrow – rewinds the video 5 seconds forward
- Down arrow – decreases video volume
- Up arrow – increases video volume
- F – turns on full screen mode
- , – when paused, rewinds the video by one frame
- I – turns on the mini player
- K – stops and/or resumes playback
- J – rewinds the flm by 10 seconds backwards
- L – rewinds the video 10 seconds forward
- > – speeds up the playback of material
- < – slows down the playback of the material
- C – turns on subtitles
- W – reduces the transparency of the subtitle background
- + – increases the size of the subtitles
- – reduces the size of the subtitles
- Shift + N – turns on the next video
- Shift + P – turns on the previous video
- Numbers: 1, 2, 3 …9 – rewind the video to 10%, 20%, 30% … 90% of the total
- typing the word “awesome” – will change the color of the progress bar to a rainbow animation
Most of the shortcuts shown replace the actions you normally have to perform with the mouse. Memorizing the most important combinations will greatly enhance your YouTube experience.
